The key e.g. flat key (2), has a card reader including a reading unit that is integrated in the key or under the key for reading and writing an electronic storage medium in a compact model e.g. micro secure digital cards and memory stick micro or mini-subscriber identity module cards. An upper key part and a lower key part are provided with a contact and a controller, where the contact and the controller are connected with each other by adhesive bonds or friction welding. The cards are disconnected from a card reader slot. An independent claim is also included for a system comprising a protection device.
