The method involves recording a real-time image sequence of an examination object i.e. thoracic cavity (2) of a patient (3), by using an X-ray fluoroscopy, and determining anatomic landmarks of the object in tomography-image data set and in images of the real-time image sequence. An image of the real-time image sequence is determined as a reference image, and a position of a medical instrument in the reference image is automatically detected, where the instrument position is assigned to the position of the landmarks within the tomography-image data set.
