The method is for the referencing of two-dimensional section pictures of a body for correlation of such pictures with instrument positions in hospital practice. The sectional pictures are taken in a photography unit (3) by means of tomography of a motionless body (1) lying on a locating surface (2) and are referenced independently of the body. In a calibration stage, at least the position of a point in the picture-taking plane is determined in a fixed-space coordinate system. During the picture-taking stage, each sectional picture is so related to the position of the locating surface that this position is also determinable in fixed-space coordinates. After photography, the locating surface is moved to an outer engagement position determinable in fixed-space coordinates. In this position, that of at least one instrument (5) is established in the fixed-space coordinate system.
