The method involves branching of a lateral channel (5) from a main channel (4). The branching is retracted by a surveying camera (7). A fluid-filled measuring hose (20) is carried with the surveying camera which forms a branch of the hose water level. Another branch of the hose water level, is formed as filling level ascertained liquid column (13). An independent claim is included for a device for recording the height profile of lateral channel.
