The device (6) has two grip arms (12) supported in a gripper housing (11), which is hung up at a carrying mechanism i.e. support arm. The arms are movable between an open position for insertion of an elongated workpiece (3) e.g. bar-like workpiece, between the arms and a closed clamping position in which the workpiece is clamped between the arms. The arms are movable for holding the workpiece while the workpiece is cut by a cutting mechanism (4). The grip arms are formed in its clamping position in an elastically movable manner when viewing in a cutting direction of the cutting mechanism. The device comprises clamping jaws made of vulcanized rubber, natural rubber or elastic plastic.
