The method involves determining adaptive scaler values based on a cylinder deactivation signal and calibrated scaler values. The cruise control commands are calculated for an engine (12) based on the adaptive scaler values for controlling speed of a vehicle (10) during the enabling and disabling of the active fuel management (AFM) control. An independent claim is included for controller for operating cruise control in vehicle.
