The method involves determining image coordinates of compensating curves (14a, 14b) at time points of minimum and maximum time-stamps, respectively. A difference vector of the coordinates is determined based on a specific formula. A binary motion value is determined by forming a scalar product with a preset direction vector (R) and comparing the product with a preset threshold value i.e. zero. An object counter value is preset and increased or reduced to one depending on the motion value, where the counter value corresponds to a number of objects (50a, 50b) present within a preset area. An independent claim is also included for a device for counting objects.
