Ion capture or guiding process, comprising:the introduction of ions into an ion trap or conductor, where the ion trap or conductor contains a first set of electrodes and a second set of electrodes, the first and second sets of electrodes being arranged in order to define an ion channel for catching or guiding the introduced ions;Establish periodic voltages on electrodes in the first set of electrodes to generate a first oscillating electrical potential that includes ions in at least one first dimension in the ion channel; andEstablish periodic voltages on electrodes in the second set of electrodes to generate a second oscillating electrical potential that includes ions in at least a second dimension in the ion channel.
