The interface (10) has a regulated power supply e.g. 5 volts power supply (20), coupled to an input node (30) of a receiver (14), and an analog-to-digital (A/D) converter (37). A resistor (R1) of a switch assembly (18) is coupled to the input node of the receiver, and a switch (SW1) is coupled between the resistor and switch assembly ground. A switch (SW2) is coupled between a resistor (R2) and the switch assembly ground, and the switch assembly has a separate switch assembly state for each switch with associated voltage potential measured between the input node and receiver ground (44). An independent claim is also included for a method for designing a switching interface.
