The device (1) has a carriage (8) connected to a steering wheel shaft housing (6) by a joint (7) and shiftably formed relative to a rail (9) in a vehicle. A steering element (13) is connected with the steering wheel shaft housing by another joint and shiftably formed relative to the carriage and the rail. A locking device restrains the mutual movements between the rail, the carriage and the steering element, when a preferential steering wheel position is adjusted. The locking device is designed as a pneumatically actuated clamp device or compression joint.
