The device has a measuring unit (120) for measuring impedance of one of fuel cells (110-1-110-10) on different frequencies. A switching unit (150) isolates a given cell (110-7) from other cells and connects the cells (110-6, 110-8) to form a system of k-1 fuel cells in one phase, where k is greater than one. The given cell is connected to the measuring unit. The switching unit connects the given cell to the cells (110-6, 11-8) for forming a system of k fuel cells, while the cells (110-6, 11-8) are disconnected, in another phase. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling humidification of fuel cells connected in series.
