The method involves determining a charge state (SOC) of a battery or measuring significant physical quantity of the charge state. Current circulating in the battery is measured to determine charge variation (DELTA-Q) of the battery by integration. A ratio between the charge variation of the battery and the corresponding charge state variation (DELTA-SOC) is determined from the measured current. A value of maximum charge capacity (Qmax) of the battery is estimated from the determined ratio, where a curve illustrating the charge of the battery based on the charge state is a straight line. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program comprising instructions for implementing a battery's maximum capacity determining method (2) a computing system such as computer module to be embarked on a motor vehicle, comprising units for implementing the battery's maximum capacity determining method.
