The method involves sending boil-up gas i.e. gaseous nitrogen (GAN), to an evaporator-condenser (13) of a low pressure column (1), and evaporating liquid oxygen (LOX) by heating a liquid bath with the evaporator-condenser. A magnetic field of an electromagnet is generated to partially compensate the hydrostatic pressure of the liquid bath. A distillation is carried out in a double column comprising an average pressure column and the low pressure column thermally connected with each other by the evaporator-condenser. An independent claim is also included for a cryogenic distillation apparatus for separating a gaseous mixture by cryogenic distillation in a low pressure column.
