The method involves researching a signal coherence test zone that tests coherence of two signals, and evaluating temporal difference between the signals in the test zone, where the test zone is an operating zone in which two components possess same response. The temporal difference is compared with a coherence detection threshold value. The coherence detection threshold value is selected with respect to localization of the two components and with respect to the test zone on which the temporal coherence determination is carried out. An independent claim is also included for a system for determining temporal coherence between two signals resulting from two different exhaust gas oxygen sensors separated by a catalyst.
