The method involves detecting a parameter (dp) characterizing upstream pressure of an exhaust gas after treatment system i.e. particle filter, and a parameter (vA) characterizing flow rate of exhaust gas. Temporal progress of quotient of the parameters is detected. Beginning and the temporal progress of regeneration process is detected by the temporal progress of the parameters. Time derivatives of the parameter characterizing the upstream pressure and the temporary progress of the quotient of the parameters are stored. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program comprising a set of instructions for performing a method for regenerating an exhaust gas after treatment system (2) a computer program product comprising program code for performing a method for regenerating an exhaust gas after treatment system.
