The method involves providing an exhaust gas treatment device (16) for converting an unwanted exhaust gas component, and determining current upward exhaust gas component (AK-vk) from upstream before the device. Downstream current downward-exhaust gas component (AK-nk) is determined based on a measurement. A measure is determined for averaged conversion of the device and is compared with a threshold value (eta-MW-Lim, eta-MW-Lim-Sim). An error signal (F) is supplied if the measure is falling below the threshold value.
