Determining susceptibility of a patient for contracting nosocomial infection, comprises collecting a biological sample from the patient and extracting biological material from biological sample; taking at least one specific reagent from an expression product of the target gene S100A9; and determining the expression of the target gene S100A9. Independent claims are included for: (1) a kit for determining susceptibility of the patient for contracting nosocomial infection comprising one reagent specific for S100A9 gene expression product; and (2) use of at least one reagent for determining, in vitro, the susceptibility for contracting a nosocomial infection in a patient.
