The device has an electronic control unit (9) with an output temperature estimator for determining an average value of an input temperature of a particle filter (8). The control unit has a setpoint temperature generator for determining an output temperature of the filter. The unit successively increases a setpoint temperature at an inlet of the filter during starting of a regeneration phase of the filter. The unit carries out each increment in the setpoint temperature only after verifying that difference between the input and output temperatures of the filter is less than a threshold gradient. An independent claim is also included for a method for regulating a quantity of fuel to be injected for attaining a regeneration temperature of a particle filter mounted in an exhaust line of a motor vehicle.
