PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique that enables the synthesis of a nitrogen-containing compound such as ammonia from a nitrogen molecule under a mild condition, for example at room temperature.;SOLUTION: By causing a transition metal nanocluster supported on a substrate to adsorb water molecules beforehand, nitrogen molecules in an activated state can stably be adsorbed by the nanocluster at room temperature. The nitrogen-containing compound can be synthesized under a mild condition by using the activated nitrogen molecules. A nitrogen hydride such as ammonia can be synthesized at room temperature by causing the transition metal nanocluster supported on a substrate to adsorb water molecules beforehand and subsequently causing the same to contact a nitrogen gas and steam.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT
