PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide automatic leveling device and a method of a head lamp for a vehicle adjusting a tilting time of the head lamp according to speed for tilting the head lamp to improve accuracy for directing an optical axis of the head lamp in a desired direction. PSOLUTION: In this automatic leveling device and the method, the optical axis 72 is directed in a prescribed direction by using a driving means 61 for vertically tilting the optical axis 72 of the head lamp 70 and a driving time calculation means 41 for calculating a driving time of the driving means 61 according to speed for vertically tilting the optical axis 72 by the driving means 61.
