PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a confocal microscope apparatus capable of independently changing the intensity distribution of stimulating light in the depth direction on a sample surface of a laser beam stimulating a sample and light for acquiring an image respectively, and an observation method using the confocal microscope apparatus.;SOLUTION: The confocal microscope apparatus is equipped with 1st scanning optical systems (100 and 100') for obtaining the scanned image of a sample with a laser beam from a first laser beam source, a second scanning optical system (200) for providing a specific phenomenon by scanning the specified part of the sample with the laser beam from a second laser beam source different from the first laser beam source, and a beam diameter variable mechanisms (102 and 202) capable of changing the beam diameter of the laser beam of at least either the first scanning optical system or the second scanning optical system.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
