PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for extracting an optical clock-signal having a simple configuration wherein its optical clock signal can be extracted independently of the polarized light direction of its optical input signal.;SOLUTION: In the device, a current injection is performed into its gain region 30 by a constant-current source 28 via an n-side common electrode 12, and a p-side electrode 24 of the gain region. A reversed bias voltage is applied to a saturable absorbing region 32 by a constant-voltage source 26 via the n-side common electrode 12 and a p-side electrode 22 of the saturable absorbing region. An optical waveguide 16 of the gain region is formed out of the quantum-well structure having an introduced bulk crystal or an introduced tensile strain, and an optical waveguide 18 of the saturable absorbing region is formed out of the quantum-well structure having an introduced tensile strain. Further, in the gain region, its optical gain to TE mode is so set as to become larger than its optical gain to TM mode, and in the saturable absorbing region, its absorbing saturation energy to TM mode is so set as to become smaller than its absorbing saturation energy to TE mode.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
