A barrier 11 for a railway platform comprising first and second walls 13, 14 connected by a top edge, wherein the top edge is vertically spatially separated from a vertical plane defined by the bottom edge of the second wall. The second wall 14 faces the platform edge. First and/or second walls 14 may curve away from the platform edge. The barrier 11 preferably receives a sliding door 12, similarly curved, with a drive mechanism preferably housed at the base in between the walls. The lower part 15 of the first wall 13 may be angled relative to the upper wall 16 so that passengers are kept away from the platform edge. The barrier 11 may have a height between 1100 and 1500 mm above the platform.
