An improved process for the preparation of high surface area hausmannite (Mn3O4) powder for ferrite comprising of reacting Manganese nitrate with NH4OH at room temperature to obtain Mn(OH)2 precipitate, subjecting Mn (OH)2 slurry to the step of air oxidation, the precipitate was filtered, washed and dried at 120°C to obtain Mn3O4. A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein the precursor is reacted with NH4OH at an alkaline pH between 8-9.An improved process as claimed in claim 1 wherein the air oxidation is carried out in fluidized bed reactor. An improved process as claimed in claim 1 wherein air flow is maintained from 2-5 litre/min. An improved process for the preparation of Mn3O4 substantially as herein described.
