Surgical cassette having an aspiration chamber disposed therein, said aspiration chamber (26) comprising: a fluid level sensing part (132) disposed close to the bottom of said aspiration chamber, functionally coupled to a fluid conduit (56) of the cassette for receiving a surgical suction fluid and having a first cross-sectional area, said first cross-sectional area of said detection part functionally to provide accurate and precise evidence of continuous fluid level changes during the use of said cassette; and a storage part (130) disposed close to the upper part of said suction chamber and fluidly coupled to said detection part and having a second cross-sectional area larger than said first cross-sectional area, said part operating storage functionally to provide adequate fluid storage of the surgical aspiration fluid during the exchange of a collection bag fluidly coupled to said aspiration chamber, and said detection portion being disposed within said aspiration chamber (26), such that the surgical aspiration fluid first functionally enters the aspiration chamber through said detection part (132) from the fluid conduit (58) and substantially fills said detection part (132) before entering said storage part (130).
