The procedure enables tracking of a target seen by the camera. Analysis of the image is carried out using a sampling grid, with chrominance or luminance signals extracted for each point for analysis. The camera alignment is automatically adjusted in order to compensate for movements detected within the image grid. The procedure for controlling the direction of the optical axis of an electronic camera, and its field of view, includes tracking of a target seen by the camera. The control of the direction of the optical axis is executed using a relationship such that the speed of variation of the optical axis position is smaller then the angular field of view is small. The relationship used is determined by the user. Control of the field of view is achieved by variation in the focal length of the camera objective lens. Analysis of the image is carried out using a sampling grid, with chrominance or luminance signals extracted for each point for analysis. The axis of alignment of the camera is automatically adjusted in order to compensate for movements detected within the image grid.
