The present invention provides a neutron multiplier pebble which includes a beryllium core having at least one of porous beryllium and metallic beryllide, wherein the beryllium core is spherical having a radius of from about 0.1 mm to about 20 mm. The neutron multiplier pebble also includes a coating on the beryllium core. Methods of making the neutron multiplier pebble are also included.
