A PROCESS FOR THE EXTRACTION OF SUGARS AND LIGNIN FROM LIGNOCELLULOSE-COMPRISING SOLID BIOMASS

A process for the extraction of sugars and/or lignin from lignocellulose-comprising solid biomass, comprising the steps of : (a) contacting the lignocellulose-comprising solid biomass with a pulping solution comprising at least 5 to 95% by weight of acetic acid at a temperature in the range of from 80 to 195°C, (b) separating the mixture obtained in (a) into a pre- treated solid residue and a liquid stream comprising dissolved hemicellulose; (c) contacting the pre-treated solid residue with a pulping solution comprising at least 5 to 95% by weight of peracetic acid at a temperature in the range of from 50 to 95°C, (d) separating the mixture obtained in (c) into a solid residue comprising delignified cellulose, and a liquid stream comprising dissolved lignin, (e) optionally precipitating lignin from the liquid stream obtained in step (d).
