Discontinuous centrifuge with a bulk material volume control and a method for operating the centrifuge

The discontinuous centrifuge, for separation of liquids and solids in a crystal suspension, has a centrifuge drum (2) on a vertical axis (3) matching the symmetrical axis of a cylindrical wall (7). A filling material (9) is added in a given amount. An ultrasonic distance measurement sensor (15), working continuously, is at the end (19) of a rod (18) within the drum but apart from the filling material to measure the distance (A1-A4) to the free surface (10-13) of the filling material, which has a rotational symmetry around the axis and at right angles to it. The filling material is added according to the sensor signals.
