The device has an alignment device (40) for aligning a back lining strip (5) for a book block (1), and a suction plate (10) positioned after a bearing of head- and foot sections (1b) of the book block and moved in a back longitudinal direction. The suction plate is mounted on a flexible folding plate (41) that is extended along a transfer movement of a retrieval position (35) to a back (1a) of the book block. An end (41.1) of the folding plate is positioned in the back longitudinal direction corresponding to the bearing of sections of the book block and attached to the back of the book block.
