PURPOSE: A display device using photonic crystal characteristics and a method thereof are provided to control the wavelength of light by controlling the intensity of electric field, a direction, and a time for a solution with electric polarization property.;CONSTITUTION: A method for operating a display device using photonic crystal characteristics separately controls a gap between particles by applying electric field to solution(914) in which a plurality of particles(912) includes the same charge. The solution has polarization property. When electric field is applied, the gap between particles is maintained within a specific range.
