The illumination unit (1) has a housing element enclosed with LED rows (5), provided on a strip-shaped plate (4). A reflection element (6) i.e. aluminum profile, is arranged at sides of the LED rows facing towards the strip-shaped plate. Light radiation of the LED rows is directed in a direction of upper and lower sides of a furniture shelf (2), and the housing element is formed as a U-shaped light translucent hollow profile. The reflection element forms a closure strip at an opening side of the U-shaped light translucent hollow profile, and includes an angle of 70-130 degrees.
