An authentication unit (101) first determines whether the prospective driver (107) is authorized to use the vehicle (100). A second unit (102) sets the driving profile or envelope of the vehicle accordingly. The two units are connected for data- and information exchange. The second unit includes memory holding driving envelopes which can be allocated to individual drivers. The second unit is so designed and implemented that the given driving profile can only be varied on appropriate authorization (108). An independent claim IS INCLUDED FOR the corresponding method.
