The sheet separating device (1) has a support (3) for receiving a stack (5) of individual sheets (12). A conveyor unit (7) is arranged above the support to contact a top sheet of the stack and transport away from the stack. An element is arranged such that it partially contacts a front edge (17) of the stack placed on the support in a transport direction (B). A moving unit is provided for moving the element in a stacking direction along the edge of the stack and in the area of the top sheet of the stack. An independent claim is also included for a method for separating a sheet from a stack of individual sheets.
