The device has a belt tensioner (10) comprising a gas pressure-operated piston (13) that is guided into a cylinder (15). Motion of the piston is transferred to the device by a force transfer element (12). The piston comprises a valve, which is actuated by motion of the force transfer element. The motion of the force transfer element is aligned in an opposite direction during tensioning operation. The piston is held at a distance to the force transfer element by a spring element. The force transfer element is provided in the form of a chain made of ball-shaped mass bodies.
