The device (1) is connected with an attachable expansion module (2) that has a digital input (Ed) in form of two electrical contacts (K1, K2) to which a voltage signal of an external binary state (BZ) i.e. passive switch (S), is applied. The signal corresponds to two binary values when a voltage value of the signal lies in lower and upper voltage ranges, respectively. The module assigns potential to the binary state of the device, and has a module-internal voltage supply (Ui) whose voltage lies within the upper voltage range. The voltage supply is connected in rows with the binary state.
