The battery has two battery modules (1, 2) electrically connected in parallel. A cooling device is provided for active cooling of the battery modules. Valve units (6, 7) are connected with the battery modules such that cooling of the battery modules is influenced depending on aging condition. The valve units are controlled depending on internal resistance of the respective battery module. The valve units include a controllable bypass line around one of the battery modules, where the bypass line is formed around a cooling heat exchanger (5). An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a battery for storing electricity.
