The storage unit has cell modules (4) comprising two-pole lithium ion cells (1a-1k). A high-voltage safe insulating material encloses the cell modules. The cell modules are clamped in a tensioning frame (6) enclosing the cell modules, which comprise a common base plate (5). The tensioning frame of the cell modules is mechanically connected with the common base plate. Minimum distance in form of an air clearance is provided between the cell modules. Gas pressure in the cells deforms a safety membrane of the cells. The deformed safety membranes short circuit both poles of the cells.
