The battery has two battery modules (1, 2) that are electrically connected in parallel with a cooling device for actively cooling the battery modules. Cooling of the battery modules is influenced by a charging state through valves (6, 7). A cooling medium is divided into different flow rates flowing through the valves. A cooling heat exchanger (5) is formed around a bypass pipe such that the bypass pipe is connected to cooling equipments via second valves. The cooling medium successively flows through the cooling equipments. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a battery for storing electrical power.
