Method for pre-reducing metal oxides (7, 8), for preparing a hot metal oxide (16) for subsequent smelting and/or for producing a nitrogen-free flue gas for further thermal evaluation comprises feeding the metal oxide according to oxidizability into a first reactor (1), releasing the bound nitrogen and/or the oxygen already bound in the metal oxide in a second reactor (3) and converting a fuel (2) into water and carbon dioxide. An independent claim is also included for an installation for pre-reducing metal oxides, for preparing a hot metal oxide for subsequent smelting and/or for producing a nitrogen-free flue gas for further thermal evaluation.
