The method involves transmitting a signal by a level indicator, and receiving the signal reflected from an object. Delay of the signal is determined based on the transmitted and received signal. A reflection profile of the received signal is determined, and a characteristic of the reflection profile is determined. The determined characteristic is compared with a reference characteristic, and a warning message is provided during deviation of the characteristic of the reflection profile over a predetermined measure. An independent claim is also included for a level indicator for transmitting a signal and receiving the signal reflected from an object.
