The method involves determining values for a minimum control period for injection of fuel into a cylinder of an internal combustion engine i.e. diesel engine, during null set calibration for an injector of the engine. An average value for the control period is determined from the determined values. Average values for multiple sliding operation phases are determined. Progress (18) of the average values is evaluated depending on an operating time of the engine. A decision is made to check whether the calibration is carried out at a future sliding operation phase, depending on the progress. An independent claim is also included for an arrangement for operating an internal combustion engine of a vehicle, comprising a control device.
