The method involves changing set values of operation parameters of an internal combustion engine i.e. diesel engine (1) so that a temperature of a particulate filter (4) is raised to a regeneration temperature for oxidation of soot deposited in the particulate filter. The values of the operation parameters is changed such that thermal regeneration of the particulate filter is cancelled when release temperature of an exhaust system falls below a predetermined lower limit for a predetermined period and after reaching a predetermined upper limit of the release temperature.
