The method involves determining a value of a physical parameter that characterizes movement of a motor vehicle, and comparing the determined value with a preadjusted threshold value of the parameter by a microprocessor (20). Sound level of an audio system (30) in the motor vehicle is reduced or the audio system is switched off when the determined value exceeds the threshold value in a direction. Speed, longitudinal acceleration, transverse acceleration, slip angle or instantaneous friction value of the motor vehicle are used as the physical parameter. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program product comprising program parts for executing a sound level controlling method (2) a computer readable data structure for executing a sound level controlling method (3) a computer readable data carrier comprising a computer program product for executing a sound level controlling method (4) a system for controlling sound level comprising a microprocessor coupled with a sensor device.
