The device (2) has an electrode (4) for detecting nitrate ions, ammonium ions and/or calcium ions, and a protection construction accommodated in the electrode. The protection construction is designed as a bell jar (6), cylinder, cage, basket or support with an opening (12). A cleaning unit cleans the electrode, where the electrode works together with a reference electrode. The opening of the protection construction has diameter of 3 cm, where the device is connected with a display device and arranged in or at a transport container. An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting amount of nitrate ions, ammonium ions and/or calcium ions in aqueous solutions or suspensions of organic material in a transport container.
