The system has an opto-electronic sensor i.e. video camera, detecting an environment (12) of a motor vehicle (1). A display unit (10) i.e. head-up display, displays information to a driver of the motor vehicle, where the system is designed such that a trajectory (14a) is determined based on a predetermined driving route and displayed on the display unit, and the deviation of a driven trajectory (14b) from the determined trajectory is determined by instantaneous detection of the environment and displayed on the display unit. The opto-electronic sensor is selected from a group consisting of a laser scanner such as a micro-mirror-based laser scanner i.e. light detection and ranging-sensor, photonic mixer device-sensor and/or a stereo video system. An independent claim is also included for a method for assisting a driver of a motor vehicle along a predetermined driving route.
