A homogenizer for homogenizing or dispersing flowable substances is proposed. The homogenizer comprises a rotor bearing, rotatably mounted and by means of a, in particular controllable, drive in rotation displaceable shaft and a stator cooperating with the rotor, wherein between the rotor and the stator at least one shearing gap is formed. In order to ensure a particularly gentle operation of the homogenizer in the case of the processing of very shear-sensitive materials, in which its shearing effect can be minimized, it is provided according to the invention that the stator with respect to the rotor between at least a first position, in which at least one axial portion of the stator is arranged radially adjacent to the rotor to form the shear gap, and a second position in which the stator is arranged in the axial direction next to the rotor, so that between the rotor and stator no shear gap is present, is axially displaceable. The invention further relates to a homogenizer equipped with a homogenizer with a mixing container connected thereto.
