The engine has a fuel injection system (1) comprising a pre-feeder pump (2) that conveys fuel towards a high-pressure pump (3) via a pump line (4). A control element (13) is arranged upstream of a pressure accumulator (12) in a connecting line (11), where fuel in the accumulator passes under pressure towards the pump line when the engine is started after stopping operation. The control element is implemented as a 2-2-way valve, and the accumulator is implemented as a hydraulic bladder accumulator or a hydraulic piston accumulator. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an internal combustion engine.
