The method involves adjusting ignition angle associated to predetermined engine cylinders, and forming amount of areas, whose ignition angle values are provided according to a pre-determined selection mode for computing an average value of a knocking correction value. Another amount of areas is formed from the former amount of areas. An octane number of fuel is determined from the latter amount of areas. A correction value of the ignition angle is calculated, based on determination of the octane number. Knocking signals are detected by a knocking sensor (3).
