The device (1) has a band for accommodating a piston ring of an internal combustion engine, where the band, an elongation measurement device i.e. strain gauge, and a drive (3) lie on a force relationship line. The drive is formed as a fluid-controlled linear drive. The band is coated with a material e.g. metal, metal oxide, titanium nitride and titanium carbide, by physical vapor deposition. An electronic control device is provided for controlling the linear drive. The linear drive is air-controlled linear drive, ball thread drive, roller screw thread drive, roller cylinder, pneumatic cylinder or electromechanical linear drive such as linear motor and linear actuator.
